From the Host

SUM’ is like an entrance for Jeju Island travelers. We have a wide range of guests, from people that arrive late at night and begin their traveling after resting for one night, to those that leave for the airport after finishing their journey. With that, we often have guests that have little time. We suggest some simple sightseeing courses near ‘SUM’ to those guests, and they can go both east and west from the intercity bus terminal, so ‘SUM’ is a popular place for guests who are frequent travelers to Jeju.

‘SUM’, your personal travel partner from Busan

offering hidden treasures of Jeju Island

It all began with a casual conversation between two friends in their thirties from Busan.
‘Should we build a playground? What about a guest house?’ In the cold winter of 2009, they decided to rent an efficiency apartment and run a guest house. Little did they know what they were about to face. Without having any related business background, it was no surprise that for the first three months, they had no customers. However, with the arrival of the summer peak season, they began to see some customers trickle in.
While the business seemed to be running well, they suddenly ran into a problem. They did not know that they had to register the guest house, so they were running the business without a license! However, despite such hardships, the business started to turn a profit. It was then that they decided to quit their jobs and devote themselves to running the guest house. They invited another friend to invest and assist in the operation and the rest, as they say, is history.

The guest house that first began in Nampodong, Busan, has now grown into a small enterprise with the official name of ‘SUM’, which represents the initials of the three owners. SUM has now expanded to seven guesthouses in Busan, one in Gyeongju, and two on Jeju Island.

‘SUM’ and ‘Mint’, which is a sister guest house of ‘SUM’, are located in front of the Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal, a major transportation point near the airport.

The owners oppose greeting their guests with typical formality, proclaiming the heart of ‘SUM’ lies in providing a facility with a clean environment like a hotel, but at the same time creating a warm, home-like environment.

For this reason, it is the staff instead of the owners who greet the guests, thinking from the point of view of the travelers, offering information and doing what they can to make guests feel comfortable.

All of the guestrooms at SUM have vivid colors. Rooms that are only for female guests are painted with hot pink, while 6-8 person rooms are painted with orange and violet colors. The first floor, where the dinner party takes place, reveals the feel of a cafe, and every guest can freely use the facilities. The free rental of climbing irons and hiking sticks also encourages guests to climb Hallasan Mountain.
