Seopjikoji Hill (섭지코지)_Coastal cliffs Made by Wind and Waves

Seopjikoji Hill (섭지코지) has always been a must for first-time visitors to Jeju Island. Yellow canola flowers fill the fields in spring, creating a colorful contrast with the red soil, called scoria, cerulean sky and navy-blue ocean. The shoreline is covered with red volcanic rocks and interesting pebbles, and many of the rocks are of strange, spectacular shapes.
"Seopji" is the old name for the area, meaning 'the place where many outstanding talents are produced', and "Koji" is a Jeju word meaning a sudden bump on land. The best photographs of Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone (Seongsan Sunrise Peak) can also be taken here. Going up the metal steps of the lighthouse, you will be intoxicated with the panoramic view of the whole seashore.
On Koji Hill, which is wide and flat, stands a smoke-signal station called “Hyeopjayeondae” that has retained its original form. Yeondae was a military communications facility used during the Joseon period. Yeondae has two kinds; a beacon fire station and a smoke-signal station. According to the records, there were 25 beacon fire stations and 38 smoke-signal stations on Jeju Island. Beacon fire stations were mostly built on the summit of oreums (volcanic cones), while smoke-signal stations were on the hilly areas along the coast.

The scenery of Seopjikoji has also been captured in several Korean films and dramas, including ‘All In’, 'The Uprising', 'One Thousand and One Nights' and many others.

You can also appreciate two beautiful architectural designs by Tadao Ando, a world renowned Japanese Architect; the Glass House and Yumin Art Nouveau Collection. Tadao Ando has designed a number of buildings on Jeju that show off his unique trademarks while incorporating aspects of Jeju’s nature. A key feature of his designs on Jeju is the use of polished concrete.
Café Mint, a contemporary art restaurant and café on the second floor of the Glass House, is a great place to relax for a moment and enjoy the miraculous sunrise and sunset.
