Where to Stay

Gotta get a comfy night's sleep before you take on that hike tomorrow!

ChujaOlle Guest House

Room Views
From the Host

Only a chosen few may enter the Island especially in the winter when the weather is capricious, not allowing ferries to run. If you are lucky, you can even see the whole island in white in the midwinter. Isn’t it wonderful to imagine the snow world of Chujado Island? Leisure travelers, or those who want to have their own time without interruptions from the outside world, do come to Chujado where you can meet a mix of Jeju and Jeollado culture coupled with unique scenery.

Where Chuja Sea enters your heart through an open window

“I am a sole traveler, a woman alone.. do you have a room on XX, XX?”
“Yup, just show up on the day.”
The heartwarming voice over the phone sounds assuring.
Hmm… there is no mention of deposit, just show up…. I was baffled as to whether the reservation was made or not (of course, this is not the case during peak season).
Though I had seen the exterior of the guest house in a picture, the actual ‘Chuja Olle Guest House’ was quite something. An alley leading to the guest house will remind you of the secret laneways in Hong Kong. Keep wandering the streets of Chujado Island and you will stumble across the sign ‘Chuja Olle Guest House’ in no time.
The host of the guest house is a native of Chujado island to the bone. He spent his youth on Jejudo Island, where he met his wife, a Jeju native. Although he was quite happy living on Jeju, his heart always yearned to go back home, to the place from where fond childhood memories remain indelibly in his mind. As a result, when Jeju Olle trail was introduced in Chujado island 10 years ago, he decided to become a guardian of the trail. On the other hand, it came amiss to his wife who was not used to life on a small island. However, believe it or not, the sea in Chuja stirred her heart.

“The sea is truly a world of marvels. I have never seen anything that much fun on Jeju.”
I wondered what made her fall in love with the sea. She replied, “Catching bomal (topshell), shell, seaweed.. even something as trivial as swimming was beyond my expectation.”

Humm, ‘we can do all those activities in Jeju as well.’
Bear in mind, Jeju is not a small island where you can kick the ball from one end to the other. If you don’t live nearby the sea even on Jeju, your lifestyle is more or less the same as living in Seoul.

The couple moved to Chujado in 2015 and bought a lodge consisting of small rooms. They reduced the number of the rooms to five and furnished every room with shower room and toilet, making the shower room much more spacious than the other guesthouses.
Perhaps it may be the name of the guest house, but many of the lodgers are olle trail walkers. The majority of lodgers want to have their own time in peace, so the host doesn’t officially organize a guest party, but you are more than welcome to host a light party in the public lounge.
Other than one suite for a couple, the remaining four rooms are equipped with bunk beds (dormitory). However, if you are a budget traveler in the mysterious Chujado Island, there wouldn’t be any place better than here!

There are no official parties, but if the guests agree, they can enjoy their own small party with a beer in the public living room. The cost is "Dutch treat".
