Where to Stay

Gotta get a comfy night's sleep before you take on that hike tomorrow!

“Echelle-tree” Guest House

Room Views
From the Host

I think the quality of food and the place you stay really matter when traveling. You took all the time out, and you want to be able to rest when you get to the place you are staying. Good memories from the guest house, so that you want to come back the next time – this is our philosophy. We just follow through with our principle, and we get a lot of returning guests even though we do not advertise.

A warm and cozy home for travelers

“Is that a guest house over there?”
The two story house caught the eye of a group of cyclists touring around Jeju. At first glance, the house looked like someone’s cabin, until they noticed the ‘Echelle Tree Guest House (에셀나무 게스트하우스)’ sign.

Foreign travelers from Hong Kong, China, or England come across Echelle Tree Guest House by chance much of the time. The house was built with the intention of being both a home for the host and his family as well as a guest house, and it took a year to complete the construction. They especially focused on the heating, as it is located close to the ocean. The walls of the house are 35cm thick, so you can forget your worries of shivering indoors in the freezing winter months.

The Echelle Tree (tamarix ramosissima), after which the guest house is named, was the best resting place for travelers in the past, who often sought its shelter from the burning Jeju sun. The tree has a reputation of growing well and providing shelter, even in the harshest of environments. Just like the tree, Echelle Tree Guest House provides comfort and shelter from the elements.

Growing up in the city, the host was appointed to work in Jeju for only 2 years but decided to stay forever. He is perceived by others to be a kind next door neighbor to the guests, visiting the guest house rather than living in it, as was first intended. He puts the needs of his guests first, and travelers have shared stories of his compassion. Worried for a guest who hurt his legs at Hallasan Mountain and had to leave Jeju right away, he refunded the room charge.
When the 5 person dormitory (for females) is full and the 6 person dormitory (for males) has 5 empty beds, he does not switch the room or accept extra guests. The comfort of his guests is a priority. Although he changes the sheets every day, he even changes the pillow case and comforter for some guests who are little more fussy about cleanliness! Nothing is an inconvenience!
