2021 Jeju World Heritage Festival (Oct. 1 to Oct. 17)

One step deeper into the mysterious Jeju lava caves

Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes are Korea’s only natural heritage site designated by UNESCO in 2007. However, much of the lava caves, which are estimated to be almost 10.7km long, has remained a hidden and mysterious place, except for the approximately 1km section of Manjanggul cave, one of the popular tourist attractions on Jeju.

Some sections of the restricted lava caves will be for the first time open to the public for 17 days during the Jeju World Heritage Festival, which will run from October 1 to 17.

It will be a great and rare opportunity to explore the marvel of the volcanic wonders of Jeju, and take a close look at the Island’s lava tube system.

The organizer (Cultural Heritage Administration and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province) has developed 3 special hiking trails which run through the Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, starting at the Jeju World Heritage Center and ending at the emerald colored Woljeongri Beach. Total distance of the trail is 22.4km and divided into 3 sections. The lava that erupted from Geomunoreum 10,000 years ago flowed to Woljeongri Beach, forming 8 lava caves, including Bengdwigul Cave, Utsanjeongul Cave, Bukoreumgul Cave, Daerimgul Cave, Manjanggul Cave, Gimnyeonggul Cave, Youngcheongul Cave and Dangcheomul Cave.

The hiking trail is one of 12 programs that the organizer has prepared for this festival.

Admission is free, but reservation in advance is required, especially to ensure overcrowding isn’t a concern during this time of Covid-19. Reservations will open from August 12.
